BUI - What is it?
The US Coast Guard urges you to understand the risks of Boating Under the Influence of alcohol or drugs (BUI). It is illegal to operate a boat while under the influence of alcohol or drugs in any of the 50 states. There is also a federal law strongly enforced by the US Coast Guard that prohibits you from operating a boat while using alcohol or drugs.
The law is in effect for all boats, from canoes and rowboats to barges and cruise ships.
This law also includes foreign vessels that operate in U.S. waters, and U.S. vessels on foreign waters.
When the U.S. Coast Guard determines that you are under the influence your outdoor boating activity may be terminated.
Your boat will be brought to mooring by the U.S. Coast Guard or a competent and un-intoxicated person on board the boat.
The U.S. Coast Guard may arrest you, detain you until sober, or turn you over to state or local authorities.
